The defining feature of the Iridium IX is its 0.6mm ultra-fine iridium centre electrode. Iridium is the hardest metal used in spark plug manufacturing — six times harder than platinum — which allows NGK engineers to reduce the electrode diameter to a fraction of a standard copper plug. This ultra-fine electrode requires significantly lower voltage to produce a spark, freeing more of the ignition system's energy to ignite the fuel mixture rather than overcoming electrode resistance. The result is more complete combustion, more consistent power output, and reduced plug fouling.
The taper-cut ground electrode geometry promotes better flame propagation through the combustion chamber versus a flat-cut electrode, improving combustion efficiency. NGK Iridium IX plugs typically last 2–3 times longer than standard copper plugs under equivalent conditions.
